The retro-tastic 935 will be the highlight of Porsche’s biggest ever display at Singapore’s premier car event.
Visitors to the Porsche stand at this year’s Singapore Motorshow will be in for a huge treat, with the German company exhibiting a 935 hypercar as the centrepiece of its display, one of only 77 in existence. CarBuyer was invited for a private photoshoot of the exclusive car yesterday, 3 January.
The 935 will be part of the most extensive lineup Porsche has ever brought to the show – nine cars – with the Cayenne Coupe the other new Porsche to make its local debut.
Originally revealed in 2018 as a 70th birthday present to itself, the 935 cost a cool €770,000 (S$1.16 million), and all have been sold, with this sole unit being the only one destined for Singapore. Its lucky owner? None other than Karsono Kwee, chairman of the Eurokars Group that holds the distributorship for Porsche, Mazda, McLaren, Mini, and Rolls-Royce in Singapore.
Not that you’d ever have a chance seeing the car roaming our streets though – it’s a track-only special, strictly not road-legal, nor homologated for any race series.
The 935 is inspired by, and pays homage to the legendary 935/78, a highly modified race car based on the 930-gen 911 Turbo. Nicknamed “Moby Dick” due to its extra wide body and ridiculously elongated drag-reducing rear bodywork, the 935/78 remains the most powerful 911 variant ever built, able to push out up to 850hp from its 3.2-litre twin-turbo engine.
That allowed it to reach 367km/h during the 1978 Le Mans 24h race, at a time when the fastest road car (the Lamborghini Miura) could only touch 280km/h.
Next to that, the 2019 935 seems a mite tame. Based on the 911 GT2 RS, the 935 uses the same 700hp 3.8-litre flat-six and 7-speed PDK gearbox, but little else besides.
Its flat-nosed, long-tail bodywork apes the original, adding over 30cm to the GT2 RS’s length (4,865mm total) and over 15cm to its width (2,034mm). The rear wing is similarly gigantic, measuring a full 1.9m across. Despite the extra size though, the 935 weighs in at 1,390kg, a reduction of 80kg.
The bonkers exterior isn’t the only tribute to legendary Porsche racers past though – the 935’s wooden gearknob harks back to the dominating 917…
…while the titanium tailpipes are modeled on those of the 908.
Underneath, there’s a full race suspension setup, race differential, racing brakes, and 11.5-inch-wide front/13-inch-wide rear wheels.
The interior is pure race car too, with just a single bucket seat, six-point harness, welded-in roll cage, plumbed-in fire extinguisher, and even an escape hatch in the roof. The digital display and carbonfibre steering wheel meanwhile, are nicked from the GT3 R race car.
The 2020 edition of the Singapore Motorshow runs from 9 to 12 January at Suntec Singapore Convention Centre across levels 3, 4, and 6. Ticket prices range from $6 to $10 and are available at the door.
