5 Coolest Electric Cars Worth Waiting For in 2019-2020 (Part 2)

The latest push in electric vehicles (EVs) has seen virtually every automaker ramp up research, development and production of top-of-the-line all-electric cars. However, issues surrounding range, charging infrastructure, and costs are causes for concern among some buyers.
With the latest electric vehicles boasting some of the most luxurious and innovative technologies and the growing infrastructure to support EVs domestically, Singaporeans can expect to start seeing some of the most exciting EVs on the road soon.
1. 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC
While it has taken the german automaker some time to get back into the industry, Mercedes-Benz bursts onto the scene with its EQC- a stylistically luxurious all-electric SUV. This EV will be competitive in terms of both range and power- putting it among class competitors such as the Audi E-Tron, Jaguar I-Pace and of course, the ever-present Tesla Model X.
The interior of the EQC is distinctly Mercedes, with two-tone quilted seating surfaces with rose gold and aluminium metallic trims. Blue is considered an indicator of a “green” vehicle in Europe, as used in LED ambient lighting behind the infotainment and cluster screens.
The 2020 EQC400 uses an 80Kw/h, lithium-ion battery, with a 7.7Kw onboard charger. On a Level 2 wall-box charger- the kind you’ll have installed at home- the EQC can replenish its battery in about 10 hours. Upgrade to 110-kilowatt DC fast charging and Mercedes estimates achieving an 80% charge in just 40 minutes.
2. 2020 Mini Electric
BMW has unveiled the first all-electric Mini with the Cooper SE. What was once a demonstration car and a far-off dream for electric vehicle fans is soon to become a purchasable reality. The first all-electric range from the brand, the Mini Electric has a purely electric drivetrain.
The Cooper SE can also manage zero to 60 acceleration in just over seven seconds, and has an engine under the hood that’s capable of delivering the equivalent of up to 181 HP. You’ll get that instant acceleration, which is a natural benefit of all-electric engines, and a really quick jump off the line to 37 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
BMW has made to start shipping the Cooper SE as soon as possible, with a likely delivery date of March 2020, as interest from pre-registered customers piqued since its initial announcement.
3. 2020 Aston Martin Rapid E
The British luxury automaker has decided to join the all-electric game with its first ever all-electric Rapid E. Stylistically based off one of the company’s older vehicles- the standard Rapide sedan- the Rapid E is now an all-electric fastback luxury sedan. It represents an overhaul from the outdated petrol-guzzling Rapide S 6.0L V12, to an exciting push by Aston Martin into the EV future.
While it is no sports car, the Rapide E is capable of sprinting from zero to sixty in under 4 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph or 255 km/h. Aston also mentions that it takes the all-electric Rapide just 1.5 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 110 km/h, an impressive feat for a rear-wheel drive-only.
Production will be limited to 155 units, and demand is high despite prices not being disclosed yet.
4. 2020 Porsche Taycan
Previously known as Mission E, the Porsche Taycan is the first in a long line of all-electric Porsches to come. The Taycan will boast two permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM), which combined will deliver over 600hp, catapulting the Taycan to 100km in under 3.5 seconds. Porsche also claims a driving range over 310 miles on a single charge, based on the NEDC.
Offering a choice of performance levels gives the Porsche EV a wider market appeal, different price points and an answer to the Tesla Model S, which until recently came in 75D, 100D and P100D flavours. Porsche is touting 400km (240 miles) in 20 minutes, 80% charge in 17 minutes and up to 100km (62 miles) in just four minutes. If it can deliver that in the real world, that’s more than enough for any urbanite looking for an all-electric city drive.
Porsche Chairman Oliver Blume has noted customers’ high demand for the Taycan, and Porsche is on course to deliver in late 2020.
5. 2020 Polestar 2
Heralded as the rival to Tesla’s Model 3, Volvo’s spin-off company Polestar is developing a new addition to its fleet of electric cars. The Polestar 2 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor: the Polestar 1, a low-volume production hybrid with 600hp. The Polestar 2 is a premium five-door electric sport sedan with two electric motors and a 78kWh battery capacity that will enable a targeted range of 500km, based on Volvo Car Group’s adaptable Compact Modular Architecture platform.
“Polestar 2 is our first fully electric car and first volume model. Everything about it has been designed and engineered with passion and dedication,” said Polestar’s chief executive Thomas Ingenlath.
The shift away from fossil fuels seems to be gathering momentum in Singapore. With more EVs being adopted en masse by transport companies, private buyers can look forward to adopting EVs with smarter, intuitive technologies without having to compromise on performance, range, and drive.
