BMW has announced that its new hybrid cars will automatically switch off their combustion engines in heavily polluted inner cities, using pure electric driving mode as a green new measure to reduce vehicle emissions.
While purely electric cars have struggled to take off in the market, accounting for only 1.5 percent of sales globally, hybrid vehicles are able to recharge its electric battery while in combustion-engine mode. This eases consumer anxiety surrounding limited operation range, and reduces pressures on cities to upgrade charging infrastructure.
The new engine cut off function will be available in BMW’s hybrids from 2020 onwards, with cities, including Rotterdam in the Netherlands, saying that the function has been proven effective in reducing pollution.
